Prayer Shawls MInistry

Sandy Ridenour of Trafalgar Christian Church introduced the making of prayer shawls to some of the women of our church. Many churches across the country have taken up this ministry.  We have seen our shawls taken forward to the front of the church to be blessed and prayed over.  Our shawls go out to our shut-ins and others have gone to friends that need our prayers. Church staff have taken these with them when they go visit our sick.

Most of the shawls are made in a three stitch pattern. Knit 3, Purl 3.These  are very significant in the Bible.  Faith, Hope, Love – Mind, Body, Spirit –Past, Present, Future.

You ask why knit a shawl? Wrapping a shawl around someone is a symbolic embrace.  It’s like a big hug or letting someone know you are thinking about them.

If anyone is interested in making a shawl you can join us on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 in the church.  We have yarn and needles for you to make your first shawl.  We will also help you learn to knit.

The following prayer accompanies each prayer shawl.

Prayer of Blessing

May God’s grace be upon this shawl...

May this mantle be a safe haven…

A sacred place of security and well-being…

Sustaining and embracing in good times as well as difficult ones.

May the one who receives this shawl be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced with peace, and wrapped in love.

Blessed Be!!
